Module #10 Youtube
I was sure I was going to have to do this module on off desk time, but luckily, last night I found the perfect video to share. I was scrolling through one of my many (addictive) websites, and came across a link for this video. I was so amazed not only with her singing, but with the editing and the costumes and especially all the time that went in to making this video. After I watched this, I immediately went to her youtube page and spent way too much time watching all of her other videos. (I was particularly amused by her cover of Friday by Rebecca Black). One of the features that I love about Youtube is the related videos side bar where I spent the rest of my time watching covers of Disney videos. I have decided that I am really just a kid at heart. I love Disney music!
Also, I definitely suggest that you watch this video! It's so awesome. Seriously.

My shelves are organized by size and subject....
Module #9: Virtual Bookshelves
The idea of a virtual bookshelf is an awesome idea for me. I love looking at people's bookshelves and seeing how they shelve their books. It's very interesting to see how people organize things. I decided to go ahead and sign up for Library Thing. When I was checking out the websites, Library Thing appealed to me more. I think it was the way the website was set up.
To sign up for Library Thing, you have to "Verify your humanity by typing the Author of the book" that they show you. Brilliant! After this, I knew I'd found a website that was meant for me. The first thing I did after signing up was put about 60 books in my library. My only problem with doing this, is that I couldn't add multiple books by the same author at once, I had to re-search the author quite a few times. It got pretty tedious. It got even more tedious when I had to go back through and add books to different collections. (My favorite collection is one I created myself: Books I can read in public.) Also there are a lot of ways to catalog the books, and I am looking forward to more in depth cataloging.
Maybe it was just my habit of skimming through tutorials and not asking for help, but I found Library Thing to not be very user friendly. It took so long to add books and separate them, it was hardly worth it. (Update: I should have taken the tour, since I've started using it, I've found a lot of short cuts and have found it a lot easier to use)
I did find some books that I would like to read, however. I found a few of books I hadn't read by my favorite guilty pleasure author, Julia Quinn: Dancing at Midnight, Everything and the Moon, and Minx. I also found a couple books by one of my favorite British authors, Isabel Wolff, Out of the Blue and The Very Picture of You, which is her newest one. After I finish this, I'm going to Tipcat to see if we have any of these...

Module #8
I try to keep my titles interesting, but I failed this time...I blame it on NaNoWriMo. All my creative energy is going into that. Today I did the Facebook module. I already have a Facebook account, so I did the Discovery exercises for that. I 'liked' the Brookston Prairie Township Public Library, my local library. (I'm technically from Chalmers, and the library there was a small room in the back of the municipal building, so that hardly counts.) I have a few fond memories of the Brookston Library. I remember going there years ago and getting this movie. I can't remember what it was called, but there were people dressed up as animals (I think), anyway, it was a very awesome movie, and I remember making my mom check it out to me all the time.
Facebook would be a great way for the library to advertise events and inform the public about events and services the library provides. Some positive outcomes of having a Facebook page for the library would be an increase in program attendance or patrons learning about more things the library can do for them besides just providing access to the computers. Some negative outcomes could be if the Facebook page was not maintained correctly (or at all) and was a sparse page with not a lot of information available. An institution might be reluctant to use Facebook as a way to communicate information because it involves a lot of up keep, and we would have to assign a person to maintain it. Also, things would have to be approved for the webpage.
It's a slow day today, so maybe I'll continue?

Tweeting about Life
I've been putting off my 23 Things because I was not keen on getting a Twitter account, mainly because I have a bad habit of finding a new website and plunging straight in and spending way too much time on it. And I don't have time to spare this month because of NaNoWriMo, but I did have some free time today at work, I decided it was time to bite the bullet.
So far, I like Twitter, it's simple, which is a lot better than Facebook is right now. (that might be because I don't have a lot of followers at the moment.) I started following the TCPL account as instructed in the 23 Things Module, but Twitter also wanted me to find some other people, so I started following Arthur Darvill (Rory from Doctor Who, I've seen some of his posts on Tumblr and he seems pretty funny), Team Starkid (I'm anxiously awaiting more news about A Very Potter Threequel), and Huffley6 (who I started following from Youtube and Tumblr).
So far the only trouble I've had is trying to write a bio in less than 160 characters. I had 21 years of things to write about...:) I suppose this is why abbreviations are so common now, but I'm old fashioned and I really dislike them. I just need to learn to keep my posts short and to the point.
Now I'm off to the Twitterverse...see you in a few weeks.
Also, follow me @ShandraNadine

Going on a Picnik...
I had a lot of fun with this one! I chose a picture of me and a gymnast at the Dance Moves and Gymnastics Spring Recital in May. I took a couple pictures, but this one is the better of the two, but was too dark to really show. I imported my photo albums from Facebook because I wanted to use a personal picture, but didn't have one handy at work. It was very nice to have all of my pictures that I had already uploaded readily available to me. I was happy that I was able to lighten it and take some of the glare away. The only thing I'm not happy with is that the edited picture is a little more pixelated. I was going to work on this more, but I was working on this at the end of my shift, and had to save it. However, when I saved it, I did not realize that it would automatically show up on my Facebook profile. I was pretty confused when I got home and saw that I had two likes on my picture! For my other edit, I worked with the saturation and tempurature to make a black and white-esque picture (and I figured out how to not save it to Facebook!) All in all, I'm glad I learned more about Picnik, and I plan on using it more to edit my (and my camera's) mistakes!

I'm using 23 Things to talk about one of my favorite things...
Module # 5: Flickr and Photo Sharing.
I'm missing England today, so the photo I picked is of Harlaxton Manor, the manor house where I spent my semester abroad. Harlaxton Manor is located a few miles out of Grantham, a small town in Lincolnshire, England. I spent the Spring semester of 2010 there with about 150 American students. During this time, I traveled around the UK visiting Edinburgh, Loch Ness, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Cardiff, among other locations. My experience at Harlaxton was amazing! I met so many different people from all over the United States and immersed myself in the English culture, which was my primary goal.
For some reason, I have a hard time figuring out photo sharing websites...they just don't make sense to me, so I went ahead and took the tour on Flickr to see the different features available. The tour was really nice and broke down all the features with brightly colored numbers. Personally, I don't do pictures that much (with the exception of my semester abroad), so using Facebook to add, tag, and share is fine with me. However flickr would be nice to use for people who aren't on my Facebook. (actually, almost everyone that would want to see my pictures are on Facebook...) I did see a cool feature where you could Map out your pictures
Below I have added a link for an album for the grounds of Harlaxton. Isn't it beautiful? Unfortunately, I could not use one of the pictures from the Harlaxton Flickr account, so I added one from my personal collection on Facebook.

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Truffles
In the back room at Klondike there's a package of Pumpkin Spice Kisses, which are surprisingly tasty. So, to keep things pumpkin related, I think I may have to try these out.

That little feed button makes sense now!
I was really excited to learn about RSS Feeds, I didn't know anything about them. What a convenient tool! I was also quite excited to discover Unshelved. (I now have a goal to read the whole comic from beginning to end.) I'm really excited to use this on my personal computer...maybe I can have less than 7 tabs open at one time! :) In general, I think this is a nice tool to find all the information I need during the day such as news, weather, etc.

I'm already on Module 3...
and I haven't died yet. :) My name is Shandra and I am a branch aide at the Klondike Branch. I'm excited about 23 Things and I'm hoping to learn more advanced skills in some of the modules.
